#MM (or whatever you wanna call it)

Maniac Monday, music Monday, #MM, "what the eff," or whatever you wanna call it... I'm having coffee here at the usual joint, realizing that I've got 20 new covers I'm starting work on this week for my ongoing busking adventure, and 2 gigs to prep for!

Don't wanna spoil surprises, but a few of the covers I'm learning: "The Wind" by Cat Stevens, "Listen To The Music" by the Doobie Brothers, & "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers. What you think?

I'm playing an acoustic set at Viper Room (acoustic lounge) on Wednesday night (6/8) at 9:45. @arianahall, @elliottsamuel, and other friends will also be on the bill that evening. And on Saturday night (6/11), @neararussell and I will be teaming up at Cafe Muse in Hollywood for a free show at 9PM. We'll be singing some tunes together and she tears it up on the piano so.. that's rad.

Aight back to ripping some albums I picked up last night by Connie Lim and Lee Ferris (unbableebable songwriters and fellow Koffeehouse artists). I'll leave you with a cool song by Trevor Hall my sister posted on her FB this morning:

Neara Russell's Noise And Silence Review

Neara Russell's album Noise and Silence has been in my car's CD rotation for a few weeks now (I was lucky enough to score an advance copy - hehe). I have been simultaneously impressed and inspired by this self-produced 13 track effort. It's poppy in a sideways manner. You can tell she's got some real pipes, and there's wittiness throughout her lyrics. My favs on the album include "Never Never Never Never" and "Shattered Glass." BTW, you'll be singing that "never never never never" bit a lot if you listen to the song a couple times. It's that catchy. "Shattered Glass" and "Blush" both have some nice rising crescendos in them where the production comes up to the perfect intensity for her vocals (and harmonies!) to crush it over. The best moment on this album though is in "Look For Something" where she simply says "I desire a peace of mind / I search for something." I think it's an appropriate place, in the middle of the album, for that kind of inner reflection. I think it helps ground the rest of the set, and gives me some context to better understand the complex rhythms, eclectic sounds, and intense visual expressions in the rest of the tracks.

For anyone who loves Tori Amos, Imogen Heap.. maybe with a little more sunshine and innocence.. you'd be well served to get Noise And Silence on iTunes or wherever you can!

In the studio with Neara Russell!

Here's a shot from the studio.. Met amazing artist Neara Russell shortly before the ASCAP Expo and since then we've been working on a new track with talented Producer Elliott Samuel.

It's called "I'll Let You Come Back."
